স্কাইপিতে প্রফেসরের সাথে ইন্টারভিউ অভিজ্ঞতার খুঁটিনাটি

প্রফেসরকে ইমেল করার পরে, আপনার প্রোফাইল পছন্দ হলে মোটামোটি সব প্রফেসরই স্কাইপিতে ইন্টারভিউ নেবেন। ইন্টারভিউ সম্পর্কিত অভিজ্ঞতা নিয়ে অনেকের জিজ্ঞাসার থাকে। মাস্টার্স এবং পিএইচডিতে স্কাইপির পূর্ববর্তী ইন্টারভিউগুলোর অভিজ্ঞতার আলোকে আমি সেগুলো তুলে ধরার চেষ্টা করেছি। গতকাল রাতে Canada র University of Montreal এর ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং ডিপার্টমেন্ট Polytechnique Montreal এর এক প্রফেসরের সাথে স্কাইপিতে ইন্টারভিউয়ের অভিজ্ঞতার প্রসঙ্গে বলি । প্রফেসরকে পিএইচডির জন্য ইমেল করার পরে উনি তারিখ ও সময় দিলেন ইন্টারভিউ এর। মন্ট্রিল ও সাউথ কোরিয়ার সময় পার্থক্য ১৪ ঘন্টার থাকার কারণে, ইন্টারভিউ সময়টা রাতে পড়েছিল। আগে ভাগেই ল্যাপটপের ক্যামেরা, নেট কানেকশন ইত্যাদি চেকাপ করে শিউর হয়ে নিচ্ছিলাম যাতে ইন্টারভিউ চলাকালীন কোন ব্যাঘাত না ঘটে।
নির্ধারিত সময়ের দশ মিনিট আগে প্রফেসর স্কাইপিতে টেক্সট দিয়ে আমার অবস্থান নিশ্চিত হয়ে নিলেন| আমি ক্লিয়ারেন্স দিলাম যে আমি রেডি। নির্ধারিত
সময়ে আমাদের ইন্টারভিউ শুরু হলো:
prof: Hi, Nazmul, how are you?

me: Hi, professor, I'm fine. how about you?

prof: thanks I'm fine.,,so is it night over there?

me: yes professor, it's night here..almost 9 pm.

prof: Ok, I see, we won't take much time ..around half an hour at best..and we will be talking on different things in our conversation. So, you have completed master's last month as I can see..so where are you now at the moment? Have you gone back to your country after masters?

me: no professor, I have not returned Bangladesh yet. I am still working as RA in my current lab.

Prof: I see..so what are you doing now these days ?

me: Well, I'm currently writing a paper for submission with my master supervisor. It was a recently accomplished project which I could not have time to finish earlier. So. wrapping up all the things here at the very last moment.

Prof: great..Basically my group would require someone to join this fall..So how long do you plan to stay with your current lab?

me: It would be a couple of months more I guess.

prof: perfect....I would like you to tell me about yourself, and your research projects that you worked under your master's supervisor and the relevant skills you are good at.

me : (described those things..He calmly listened to me without interrupting anywhere in the middle for the entire time)

prof: sounds pretty good. I can see in your profile you have a lot of papers as a master student. Besides, I'm more interested in (XXXX technical jargons) which I can see in your resume..You see I am trying to (again discussing technical aspects of the project, unfolding different aspects that i need to know.)

me: ...(now the technical discussion began..This tech discussion went on more than ten minutes.I am omitting this technical part)

prof: sounds very nice..I can also see that you worked with many research collaborators some of them I know very well (at this point, he mentioned about a famous prof. in my field, who is an IEEE Fellow and with whom I had a paper..trust me big-shot prof. will buy you a lot of attention and respect from other prof). 
So could you tell me about the idea you implemented in ... (again technical discussion)

me: (duly explained.)

prof: that's good..so I would prefer a PhD student who already know the hands-on measurement skills as you have, I mean it is not always convenient to direct each and every little matter to a PhD student. anyway, so what is the first thing you do when you come up with an idea? I mean how would you understand if it is implementable?

me: it depends on several things professor. Usual direction will be searching the literature to find out if any relevant work has been done or not. If done, in what degree it has been done. As for implementability, it again depends on the type of project- a long term funded project can have the time window to spend a couple of months on initial investigations on the feasibility check of the idea whereas short term projects would not have that luxury. We just need to move on and meet the deadline sometimes.

prof: (a long pause.. was looking down at something)..yeah those are good points...Actually I'm taking quick notes of our conversation..please don't worry about my pause..do you have any question?

me : asked about one technical project related question and he explained.

prof: So, Nazmul did you check our research facilities at Montreal? We have all sorts measurement facilities from ...(technical jargons again )

me: yes professor, I have already checked them and they are impressive.

prof: right..when you would join my group you would see for yourself..we have (technical jargons about instruments and facilities)..do you like to know anything more?

me: Well, prof. I would like to add one thing that as a graduate student I have applied to several schools and I would eventually join the school based on my expectation and circumstances. So, I would request you to have some back-up option . (He knew that I am holding a current PhD scholarship offer at University of Queensland, Australia as I mentioned it in CV)

prof: yes of course. you are right. I am trying to aim for highly qualified candidates and you are in fact one of those candidates that I am very interested in. I have at present several PhD vacant slots for this Fall and sufficient number of projects which can fund several candidates. So, if you join me, it will be a funded position. As you know, poly Montreal has a fixed PhD salary (mentioned the amount).. I want you to submit the application very soon and mention my name. Then it will directly come to me , and will be processed very sooner. And you can always keep me updated about your future plan, no problem at all.

me: yes professor, I will submit the application and keep you updated regularly.

prof: yes, that would be very nice. Thank you Nazmul. Have a good time then..

me: thanks professor..it was nice to talk to you..
prof: (smiling).. good night bye bye..

ইন্টারভিউ টিপস: ইন্টারভিউয়ের আগে চা কফি এড়িয়ে চলুন কারণ কারো কারো জন্য ক্যাফেইন anxiety স্টিমুলেট করে। নার্ভাস হবেন না। প্রফেসরের বর্তমান প্রজেক্ট গুলি, রিসেন্ট পাবলিকেশনের ১/২ টা মন দিয়ে পড়ে নোট আকারে পয়েন্ট করে রাখবেন যেনো ইন্টারভিউতে আপনি কেবল মাত্র উত্তরদাতা হিসেবেই ভূমিকা পালন না করে, বরং আলোচক হিসেবে অংশগ্রহণ করতে পারেন। মনে রাখবেন, আপনি যোগ্য বলেই প্রফেসর আপনার ইন্টারভিউ নেবার জন্য শিডিউল বের করেছে। অতএব, কনফিডেন্স বজায় রাখুন এবং নিজের রিসার্চ অভিজ্ঞতার (সেটা যতটা সামান্যই হোক) সেটা স্পষ্ট ভাবে ক্লিয়ারলি ব্যাখ্যা করার মত এটিটিউড রাখুন। পরিশেষে, সময় মেনটেইন করবেন। লেট্ করবেন না ইন্টারভিউ এটেন্ড করতে।
